Lemon, Zumbani & Honey Tea: A Soothing Elixir for Every Season

This vibrant and flavourful tea is a beloved Zimbabwean remedy, cherished for its soothing properties when enjoyed hot during colds or as a refreshing beverage when served chilled. Combining the zesty brightness of lemon, the aromatic warmth of zumbani (Lippia javanica), and the natural sweetness of honey, this tea is a true testament to the healing power of nature.

Health Benefits:

  • Lemon: Packed with vitamin C, an antioxidant that boosts immunity and fights infection. Also aids digestion and helps to detoxify the body.
  • Zumbani: A traditional herb used in Zimbabwe to relieve coughs, colds, and flu symptoms. Possesses anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
  • Honey: A natural sweetener rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and enzymes. Soothes sore throats, promotes gut health, and boosts energy levels.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large lemon, washed and sliced
  • 4-5 sprigs of fresh Zumbani (or 1 tablespoon dried Zumbani)
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey (preferably from Esther’s Milk & Honey Farm!)
  • 4 cups filtered water

Instructions for Hot Tea (Cold Remedy):

  1. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
  2. Add the lemon slices and Zumbani to the boiling water.
  3. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavours to infuse.
  4. Remove from heat and strain the tea into a mug.
  5. Stir in the honey until dissolved.
  6. Inhale the steam to clear congestion, then sip slowly.

Instructions for Iced Tea (Refreshing Drink):

  1. Follow steps 1-4 as above.
  2. Allow the tea to cool to room temperature.
  3. Add additional water or ice cubes to desired strength and chill thoroughly in the refrigerator.
  4. Sweeten with honey to taste before serving.
  5. Garnish with a fresh sprig of Zumbani and a lemon wedge, if desired.

Tips and Variations:

  • For a stronger flavour, use more Zumbani or let it steep longer.
  • Adjust the amount of honey to your liking.
  • Add a pinch of ginger or a dash of cinnamon for extra warmth and spice.
  • Experiment with other herbs like mint or basil for a unique twist.

Enjoy this delightful tea as a comforting remedy for colds or a refreshing treat on a warm day. Cheers to your health and well-being!
