The sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. The cows have been milked, the honey collected, and a quiet settles over our farm. It’s moments like these that I’m reminded of why I chose this path – the path of a farmer.
Growing up in the Eastern Highlands, the earth was always a part of me. My parents’ plot, with its vibrant rows of vegetables and our two beloved beef cows, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the land and its bounty.
I never imagined I’d become a commercial dairy farmer, but life has a funny way of leading you where you’re meant to be. In 2018, the land my husband inherited from his parents became our canvas. It was a chance to honour our roots and to contribute to our beautiful Zimbabwe.
The early days were filled with challenges, from learning the intricacies of dairy farming to navigating the dry climate of Chikomba. But with every setback, there was a lesson, a chance to grow. We drilled boreholes, planted drought-resistant crops, and found innovative ways to care for our animals.
And the rewards? Oh, they’re immeasurable. The sight of healthy, happy cows grazing on our pastures, the sound of buzzing bees collecting nectar, the taste of fresh milk and golden honey – these are the moments that fuel my passion.
But it’s more than just producing food. It’s about nurturing the land that sustains us. It’s about creating jobs and supporting our community. It’s about proving that with hard work, dedication, and a love for the earth, we can achieve great things.
Earth is what we all have in common. It’s our shared home, our provider, our legacy. As farmers, we have a unique responsibility to protect it and to cultivate a future where everyone can enjoy its gifts.
At Esther’s Milk & Honey Farm, we’re committed to this mission. We’re not just farmers, we’re stewards of the earth, nurturing the land and nourishing our nation, one bottle of milk and jar of honey at a time.
